fact150Polar bears are incredibly adapted to their harsh Arctic environment, and one of the most interesting facts about them is their fur, which isn't actually white. Each individual hair is transparent and hollow, allowing sunlight to penetrate and reach their skin, which is black to absorb heat. This combination provides excellent insulation and helps them stay warm in freezing temperatures. The "white" appearance comes from the way the transparent fur reflects visible light, blending perfectly with the snow and ice, making polar bears almost invisible to their prey.

Another fascinating aspect of polar bears is their remarkable swimming ability. Polar bears are classified as marine mammals, as they spend much of their life on sea ice and can swim long distances. They use their large, powerful forelimbs like paddles, while their hind legs act as rudders, helping them navigate through the water. Polar bears have been known to swim up to 60 miles without stopping, and some individuals have been recorded swimming even further, up to 100 miles in search of food or new ice floes.

The polar bear's primary prey is the ringed seal, which it hunts by waiting patiently at breathing holes in the ice. Using their acute sense of smell, polar bears can detect a seal from almost a mile away or beneath several feet of snow. This sense of smell is crucial for survival, as food sources can be scarce in the Arctic. Unfortunately, climate change is drastically affecting the sea ice polar bears depend on, making it harder for them to hunt and find food. As a result, polar bears are considered vulnerable, with their population facing significant threats due to the warming Arctic environment.
