fact150Otters are playful, highly intelligent animals, and one of the most interesting facts about them is their use of tools. Sea otters, in particular, are known for using rocks to crack open the hard shells of their favorite food, such as clams, mussels, and sea urchins. They even have a special pouch under their forearms where they can store a favorite rock for future use. This makes them one of the few non-human animals known to use tools in their daily lives, showcasing their problem-solving abilities and adaptability.

Another fascinating trait of otters is their social behavior. River otters, for example, are very social and often live in groups called "rafts." They are known for their playful antics, such as sliding down muddy or snowy banks, wrestling, and playing with each other. This playfulness is not just for fun, but also helps them build strong social bonds within their groups. Sea otters, though more solitary, still display remarkable social behaviors, such as holding hands while floating in groups to avoid drifting apart in the ocean—a behavior often referred to as forming "otter rafts."

Otters are also essential to their ecosystems. For instance, sea otters play a critical role in maintaining the health of kelp forests by controlling sea urchin populations, which can otherwise overgraze the kelp. This makes otters a keystone species, as their presence has a disproportionately positive impact on the environment they inhabit.
