fact150Hedgehogs are charming and unique creatures, well-known for their distinctive spiny coats. One fascinating fact about hedgehogs is their remarkable ability to roll into a tight ball as a defense mechanism. When threatened, hedgehogs will curl up, tucking their heads and legs under their spines to protect their vulnerable parts. This defensive posture is so effective that it can deter many potential predators, as the sharp spines make them uncomfortable to handle. Their spines are actually modified hairs made of keratin, the same material that makes up human nails and hair.

Another interesting aspect of hedgehogs is their hibernation behavior. In colder climates, hedgehogs enter a state of hibernation during the winter months to conserve energy when food is scarce. During hibernation, their metabolic rate drops significantly, allowing them to survive on their stored fat reserves. This period of inactivity can last several months, depending on the temperature and availability of food. As temperatures warm up, hedgehogs gradually awaken from hibernation, emerging to search for food and resume their regular activities.

Hedgehogs also have a curious habit called "self-anointing." When hedgehogs encounter a new or unusual scent, they often lick and chew the source of the scent and then spread the resulting frothy saliva over their spines. The exact reason for this behavior is still not entirely understood, but it is believed that self-anointing may help hedge against parasites, mask their scent, or simply be a way of exploring their environment. This fascinating ritual adds another layer to the intriguing behavior of these small, spiny mammals.
